The love that creates and maintains such an image is a powerful force - a force sufficient to influence the soul of the one we love. The soul of a friend responds to the influence of this force with appropriate energy, and this energy fills the mental image that we have created, and thus our friend actually remains with us, and moreover, more directly than is possible in earthly life. Let us not forget that love is caused not by the body, but by the soul of a friend, but here we have with us the soul of a person. To this they may say: “yes, this could be so if the friend died, but suppose that he is still alive, and then his soul cannot be in two places at the same time.” In reality, the soul can be in two places at the same time and even in more than two; and the fact that our friend, in our opinion, is alive or dead, does not make the slightest difference. Let us try to understand more clearly what the soul essentially is, and then we will better understand the actual course of things.

The human soul belongs to a higher plane; it is something incomparably greater than all its manifestations. Its relation to its manifestations is the relation of one dimension to another; square to line or cube to square. No number of squares could make a cube, since a square has only two dimensions, while a cube has three. In the same way, no number of manifestations on one of the lower planes can exhaust the fullness of the soul, which belongs to a completely different world. She puts a small part of herself into the physical body in order to gain experience that is possible only on the physical plane; she can only use one such body at a time, because that is the law; but if she could use a thousand bodies, even then they could not fully express her real essence. She can have only one physical body, but if she has managed to evoke such love in her friend that this friend has her image everywhere before him, then she can pour her own life into his mental image, reviving him to the degree of true expression of her own. essence on this high plane; the latter, as we know, exceeds the physical world by two whole planes and therefore represents incomparably better conditions for the expression of spiritual qualities.

For those who find it difficult to imagine their consciousness being active in different manifestations at the same time, it is useful to make a comparison with ordinary physical experience. Each of us, sitting in our chair, experiences several physical touches at the same time. He is touching the seat of the chair, his feet are touching the floor, his hands are touching the arms of the chair, or perhaps holding a book; and yet it is not difficult for his brain to perceive all these contacts at the same time; why is it impossible for a soul which is so much greater than its physical consciousness to be conscious at the same time of more than one manifestation on planes which are so much lower than its own level? We know that all these different contacts are actually experienced by one and the same person; and in the same way, one and the same soul really feels all such mental images, and in all of them it is equally real, full of life and love. Here we have the best side of the soul, for here it can express itself incomparably more fully than is possible for it under the most favorable conditions on the physical plane.

But can this affect the evolution of a friend? - they may ask me. Of course he can, because it gives him an extra opportunity to prove himself. If he lives in a physical body, he is already undergoing physical lessons, but this will give him at the same time the opportunity to develop much more quickly the ability to love through the mental image that the deceased friend created for him. Thus, the latter's love does great good for him.

As we have already noted, the soul is capable of manifesting itself in many likenesses that are created by others for it. A person who is greatly loved by many people can participate in many celestial experiences simultaneously and thus develop much more quickly; but this possibility is the direct consequence of those loving qualities which attracted to him the affections of many people. Thus, he not only enjoys the love of many, but thanks to this he himself grows in love, no matter whether his friends belong to the living or to the dead.

But it should be added that there are two limitations to such communication. First, the image you create of your friend may be imperfect - it may lack some of his higher properties, and then these properties will not be able to manifest through him. And secondly, difficulty may arise from the friend himself. Your idea of him may not be entirely correct; perhaps you have exaggerated it in some direction, in which case it will not be able to fill with its content one of the aspects of your mental image. But this is difficult to accept and can only happen when a completely unworthy object is unreasonably deified. But even then the creator of the mental image will not feel a change in his friend, for it is incomparably easier for the latter to realize his ideal now than during the communication of both friends in the physical world. Without being perfect, he will still appear better than he appeared on earth, and the joy of the one in heaven will not be clouded.

Your friend can imbue hundreds of his likenesses with the qualities that he possesses, but if any quality is not developed in him, it cannot arise just because you have attributed that quality to him. This is the great advantage of people who create only such images that are not capable of disappointing them, or rather, those that can rise above all the ideas created about them by the lower mind. The student who creates the image of his Teacher realizes that all the dissimilarity will come from the imperfection of this image, for here he draws from such a depth of love and spiritual strength that he cannot measure with his mind.

But, it may be asked, since the soul spends so much time enjoying the bliss of the heavenly world, what is the possibility of its development during this stay? This possibility can be of three kinds, although each of them allows many modifications.

First, thanks to certain inner qualities, man has opened certain windows into the heavenly world; having practiced these qualities for so long, he will greatly strengthen them and return in his next incarnation richly endowed in this regard. All internal processes are strengthened by their repetition, and a person who has trained for a long period - say, in selfless devotion - will learn at the end of this period to love strongly and completely.

Secondly, if his desire brings him into contact with one of the categories of spiritual beings discussed, he will inevitably gain much value from intercourse with them. Thus, in music he learns from them many overtones and variations, hitherto unknown to him; also in painting and in the plastic arts he will learn what he had no idea about on earth. All this new will gradually be imprinted on him, and he will return from the heavenly world incomparably richer than he was before.

Third, he can learn new things with the help of those likenesses of loved and revered people that he has created. If these are people who are much higher than him in development, he can gain a lot of new knowledge through them; The higher the creature corresponding to such a mental image, the more new knowledge can be obtained through it.

But what matters most is the life of the soul itself in that imperishable body (causal or causative), which it carries with it from life to life unchanged, except for its natural evolution. When the celestial experiences come to an end, the mental body of man is thrown off in its turn, as the two lower bodies were thrown off, and then life begins in the causal body. Now the soul does not need windows, for here is its homeland and here all the walls have collapsed before it.

Most people are deprived of almost all consciousness on this high plane: they rest in a state that can be compared to slumber, unable to perceive the life of this world that is too high for them, although the visions that flash before them are not the product of fantasy, but the phenomenon of this world; nevertheless, each time they return, their limitations will decrease, and the consciousness of this true life of the soul will open before them more widely and more fully. At the same time, the life expectancy in this high state will increasingly increase in comparison with existence at the lower stages of existence.

As a person grows, he becomes capable not only of receiving, but also of giving. He is increasingly approaching the crown of human evolution, he learns the lesson given by Christ, he learns the greatness and joy of sacrifice, he experiences the highest delight of pouring out his life to help his neighbors, giving up his self for everyone, bringing all his enlightened powers to the aid of struggling humanity.
